Public bug reported:

As i had problems with X/Ubuntu 10.10/10.04 and LTSP i ended up with the
nbd-client timeout-option as the only more or less save way to prevent
the clients from hanging/freeze if the server reboots/shutsdown/hangs. I
still need an little script that reboots or shuts down the cllients, but
at least they now recover automaticlly and there is no need to restart
them manually.

To use the timeout-Option i had to download and compile the nbd-sources
manually as the thru apt-get obtainable version is compiled on a kernel
without NBD_SET_TIMEOUT and the use of that option gave following error:

--> Error: Ioctl NBD_SET_TIMEOUT cannot be called when compiled on a
system that does not support it

With the self-compiled version (nbd-2.9.18) it worked and i managed to
get the clients get aware of missing nbd-connection in an acceptable
period of time and take action.

So, please release a patch to fix this in 10.04 and 10.10.

As Ubuntu uses the version nbd-2.9.14* and nbd-2.9.18 is out already,
beside the timeout-option an update should be considered.

Thank you and kind regards,
K.O.
