Public bug reported:

This bug is pretty straight-forward and though I tried to search the
archives i didnt find a reference.

What I did:
After the installation of dapper 6.06 LTS i was not able to access either of my
2 cd rom drives (one is a dvd). both are on seperate ide channels. I tried
all of the normal things: checked /etc/fstab and mtab, checked /dev/cdrom etc.
I tried a few utilities but nothing could detect the cdrom drive.

How I fixed issue:
After the installation I noticed that grub was confused (seperate bug) and I
had to edit it to boot ubuntu from the menu. also after i did the initial
updates to the system I saw the kernel level changed but instead of grub
cleaning up the old kernel entry it kept it there though invalid (another bug).
After fixing those two issues in the grub install magically the cdrom drives
showed up on the desktop and everything is fine now.

how to replicate:
do a fresh install of dapper and install all the updates. if you dont edit the
grub config the issue should be present.
