Just upgraded to 10.10 (Server) from older Debian [don't ask!], started
getting this problem. Be warned, if you haven't done much research on
this problem yet, you will find the gamut of remedies described on the
net.

For me, what worked was a BIOS update. Board: Tyan Tomcat K8E (S2865
AG2NRF). It's been in place for years working with original BIOS
(1.01). Flashed to "current" 2006-11-15 (v 3.04). There's a BIOS
setting in there for Operating System, choices are "Other" and "Linux".

Problem solved. Hope yours goes as well!
