Or alternatively, if the kernel provides a way to supply replacement
edids, then it could be plugged in that way.  There's a patch proposed
for this - http://www.spinics.net/lists/dri-devel/msg00802.html

For obtaining a replacement edid, one way is to make it using a Windows
utility, referenced at http://analogbit.com/fix_nvidia_edid

I've also heard of people plugging the monitor into the VGA port and
getting a better EDID that way.
