Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, you are trying to manually install a newer
version of a package in a previous Ubuntu release, this is very likely
to fail because of missing (or not recent enough) dependencies (as you
already noticed). If you'd like to have simple-scan 2.32.0 package for
Ubuntu Lucid you can request a backport
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#How%20to%20request%20new%20packages).

PS: If you manually try to build with ./configure be sure that you have
the relevant development package for zlib installed (zlib1g-dev).
