Sorry for my late response, I have been away for a few days. I updated the system today and the reported problem was gone. I was able to shutdown from within KDE! I then I tried to suspend to disk, but only the screensaver started, I guess I don't have enough swap space. The system did shutdown after this o.k. But after the next boot the same problem is back: The system hangs when shutting down from within kubuntu, screen blanks and nothing happens, keys are dead so that I have to press power off for 5 seconds.
