I've rolled back to 2:0.98.1653+git88b90d9-3 and the bug is still there when I use mencoder with the bitrate x264 parameter (while it wasn't before upgrading to 2:0.98.1653+git88b90d9-3ubuntu1). It's upsetting, because it shouldn't do that and I've got no clue why it doesn't work anymore (same script, system is fully up to date except x264 and libx264, no customization at all).
