I have changed the bug report to just one problem, since the window bars seem
fine now (possibly a partially broken update previously).
I am using the standard Gnome desktop (not Unity). There were no changes made
by myself to xorg.conf or anything (other than what I have done below if that
changes any configurations). What I did (and have to do to boot to gdm) is:
1. Choose recovery mode in the GRUB boot menu
2. Choose X failsafe mode
3. Allow system to boot to gdm login screen.
4. Choose to restart at the login screen.
5. Allow system to reboot.
6. Choose the normal Ubuntu boot option in GRUB.
Once that is done, there are no further problems, until the system is
shut down or rebooted.
