The logs indicate this is a problem in the SANE drivers, so I'm assigning this to the sane-backends package. We attempted to update this in Lucid, but while it fixed some drivers, it made others worse. See bug 600516.
As a workaround, you can update to the latest SANE drivers by following these instructions and this may fix your problem: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpdateSaneWithPpa Note that the SANE drivers are made by the SANE project and not Ubuntu.
