Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and 10.04 64bit and several 64 bit kernels form the mainline
package, for example: 2.6.33; 2.6.35; 2.6.36
Desktop Acer Aspire M5201: AMD PhenomII; 2x 640 HD; 8 Gig ram; Radeon HD 4850;
Lan Marvell 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit; Wlan RTL-8185 (rev 20):
After installation all worked fine, reboot too.
After some boots and updates it happend each time when I tried to reboot:
Ubuntu goes for reboot without any error message and then bios hung at the bios
startscreen (foto) Ubuntu (9.10 64bit; 10.04 64bit), del and F12 didn't work,
so that I had to press the power button to switch off. The next switch on and
boot worked.
I tried to repboot: sudo reboot; sudo init 6 ......without anyresult. I tried
several kernels also from the mainline package without any result; I tried
several boot-options and a bios-update without result: Bios hung at the bios
staartscreen after reboot.
By looking for errors in dmesg and logs, I found: <acer-wmi: No or unsupported
WMI interface, unable to load>
I resolved the problem by creating a file: blacklist-acer-wmi.conf in
/etc/modprobe.d and wrote blacklist acer-wmi into the file. Now the reboot
works. (suspend to ram and suspend to disk, too)
