I'll need to have a more detailed look at the replay gain feature, there are some things that could be optimized. But theoretically it should work. lame should calculate the replay gain value and add it to the mp3 file. Please keep in mind that replay gain is just a loudness correction offset saved to a tag. Your audio player has to support this replay gain tag in order to adjust the loudness. The audio data itself won't be changed so comparing the two files in audacity shouldn't show any difference if it's working.
