The bit of being unable to update software has been SOLVED using this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-621698.html The solution involved backing up the directory /var/lib/apt/lists/ then deleting everything inside it (except for the backup, obviously) and then running apt-get again. The reamining trouble is the one with passwords not been properly typed in within dialog boxes, either in KPackegeKit or other applications with routines which graphically require user authentication.
