I recently dist-upgraded one of my 10.10 machines that won't play sound for .pps/.ppt files. This did not fix the problem. Note that my problem is not the same as Andre Mangan's -- sound works perfectly with every other application I've tried (VLC, firefox flash plugin, system sounds, etc..).
Next I'm going to try uninstalling the Ubuntu open office packages and installing the .deb's from openoffice.org. I'll start with 3.2.0 to see if the problem is just an Ubuntu issue.
