Public bug reported:

Hello,

I'm using Toshiba Tecra A2. I have Ubuntu 6.10 / Windows XP dual boot.

Following problems encounter regarding recognition of German symbols
ä,ö,ü,ß:

With dual boot system, I have my files on shared data partition (ext3).
If I save there file using Windows, and this file's name contains above
mentioned German symbol, in Linux there's a "?" sign (sign "?" is in
black quadrant) instead of that symbol and the file can't be opened
unless first renamed. In opposite, if I save a file on shared files
partition using Linux, in windows there's strange symbols (however, not
"?") instead of german symbols. However, these still can be opened in
Windows.

These observations are mostly done using .txt .doc .xls files.

Another issue with the same problem:

In my student's house there are several wireless networks and some of
them have names containing german symbols. These networks cannot be
contacted - Names of these networks are displayed in Ubuntu terminal,
again, with "?" instead of German symbols / or cannot be seen at all.
Other networks, names of which don't containt german symbols, can be
communicated without problems.

Hope these issues will be considered in next ubuntu releases.
