The same happened to me with Debian Lenny, and now with Ubuntu lucid. With debian I ended up disabling ehci_hcd driver, and consecuently, having low speed on USB ports. With previous versions of Debian it didn't happened, and with versions of Ubuntu prior to 2007. I think it is a kernel problem with that module (ehci_hcd).
