Can you verify that in /etc/X11 isn't there a xorg.conf file, if there is then
rename it as xorg.conf.old
If you want can also try the most advanced kernel from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.37-rc7-natty/

10.10. After upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 black screen occurs. grub
invisible, desktop invisible. system is running at background on kernel
