This is a "known issue" according to
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/natty/alpha1 : "The gnome-panel run from
the Ubuntu classic session can have applets crashing at start with
compiz enabled. One solution is to use metacity in the meantime."
Occurs for me and others when logging in to Gnome classic desktop after
Unity session.
