The package manager should be aware that a restart is required. Why doesn't the package manager not know that beforehand?
When the package manager is aware a restart is required, an option button should be shown with restart - don't restart messages. This way, somebody can abandon the computer during update, and come back with a clean session. I suppose that if somebody is working and the computer needs to reboot, the work in progress can be saved before the computer restarts.
