The package manager should be aware that a restart is required. Why
doesn't the package manager not know that beforehand?

When the package manager is aware a restart is required, an option
button should be shown with restart - don't restart messages. This way,
somebody can abandon the computer during update, and come back with a
clean session.

I suppose that if somebody is working and the computer needs to reboot,
the work in progress can be saved before the computer restarts.
