The developer responsible for the Genre feature has been through a change of jobs and moving to a different country and has been unavailable for some time. However he has started working on Banshee again recently, while this bug is high on his personal todo list there is a mount of bug reports needing attention from him.
If Ubuntu feels the need to ship something, there is a genre browser patch, but Alex seems to have plans for something more.
