The "gutenprint" driver in package foomatic-db is a pseudo-driver only used for
listing the supported printer models on the linuxprinting.org website. It is
impossible to generate PPDs from it since it has no ghostscript command line.
Running sudo foomatic-cleanupdriver cleans up all these pseudo-drivers and
should fix this. According to me Ubuntu should not include these pseudo drivers
into the foomatic-db package and run foomatic-cleanupdriver before packaging.

Gutenprint provides both CUPS rasterto binary driver+PPDs and
gutenprint-ijs.5.0 binary driver+Foomatic PPDs for the printers it
supports. Since Ubuntu uses the CUPS spooler their is no need for the
gutenprint-ijs.5.0 binary driver+Foomatic PPDs, there are only usefull
for use with other printer spoolers like lprng. The packages foomatic-
db-gutenprint and gutenprint-ijs.5.0 should not be installed by default
on Ubuntu.

It makes no sense to match the gutenprint-ijs.5.0 foomatic driver with a
cups only PPD. Although it doesn't do any harm, if you specify a PPD
with foomatic-configure the driver will be ignored.

The above command works for me on my up to date Dapper without giving
errors.

It looks like the foomatic packages installed on your system are broken,
please tell us which foomatic packages you have installed by using the
foomaticbuginfo script that can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript.

You could have used lpadmin or the CUPS web interface (since 1.2.2) to
set up your printer without problems.
