filesystem or disk may be having problems. I advise performing:
$ sudo touch /forcefsck
and rebooting, which will cause filesystem checks to be run. After this
completes, you can try to:
$ sudo apt-get -f install
Then try update-manager again. If you are still having problems, look in
/var/log/kern.log and/or the output of the 'dmesg' command for what
might be going wrong with your hardware.
