I'm surprised it's not working for you because
your system is almost the same like mine (Inspiron 1501
and Vostro 1000 share the same "guts"). You even
have the same wifi card.

Could you check whether "pcie_aspm" in /etc/pm/power.d has
"rw--r--r--" permissions?

If so and your system still crashes while on battery,
could you please create another empty file "wireless" in
/etc/pm/power.d folder with permissions "rw-r--r--"?

Then run "sync" before removing the power cord to
minimize filesystem corruption.
