1) Ubuntu release 10.10
2) Tar version 1.23-2
3) I was compressing about 150 Gb of data on a 160Gb external HD running
NTFS and connected by USB. I had performed this operation by right-
clicking on the group of highlighted files in Nautilus and selecting
[Compress...]. I expected the highlighted files to be compressed into a
tar ball.
4) Some compression was done. Then the operation reported an error. It
provided no specific details of what the error was. It merely said there
had been an error. A 4Gb tar ball was created. There's about 4Gb of
space left on the drive. I suspect the resulting tar ball is a little
too small for the operation to have completed successfully.
I tried to open the 4Gb archive with Archive Manager, to see how far it
had got and where it had stopped. It took its time and then reported the
following error:
"
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
"
I have been unable to compress my data.
Perhaps it has run out of space in which to perform the operation? My
local disk still has 95 Gb of space available.
