Public bug reported: OS: Ubuntu 10.10 i386
Issue Summary: I have observed some serious network file transfer performance issue during testing with Realtek network controller R8168 (Complete info in lspci is: "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller"). Finding: After further investigation with 2 systems I have, I found the issue only happens on REV.6 hardware (rev 06 or -r06). Realtek engineer confirmed rev.6 HW is not well supported by inbox driver, and will have performance issue. After using r8168 driver from Realtek, ethernet controller rev.6 performance has significant improvement, from 2-3 MB/sec to 20+ MB/sec during network file transfer thru office LAN. Driver source can be found here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=2&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false Reproduce steps: 1. Boot the system and connect to LAN 2. Setup another system connect to the same LAN 3. Start file transfer (scp) between both systems and observe the speed Attachment: r8168 dkms package Notes: 1. If you are seeing the same issue, you can use the attached dkms package to install r8168 driver. 2. Before installing the attached deb package, r8169 needs to be blacklisted. lspci info for the controller: 13:00.0 "Ethernet controller" "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd."
