Just got around to checking this out. Thank you. Your response is correct. I had been compiling grub 0.98 for use on an embedded system and must have mistakenly installed to the boot drive of the laptop. Reinstall Grub2 solved the problem.
I have moved up to using Grub2 so if I make this mistake in the future...... Thanks again. Selected the default > 'N' to not create the file. Your bug report shows that this system was initially installed as Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which uses grub2 by default, but that you have subsequently removed the grub2 package in favor of grub1 without configuring it. Saying 'N' here means that you are declining to configure it, leaving your system with no way to update a boot loader config for the newly- installed kernel. You need to have a configured bootloader, either by configuring grub1 here or by reinstalling grub2 with the following command: 'sudo apt-get install grub-pc'. (The correct default answer to the grub prompt is 'no' because there are other steps you must take to configure the bootloader - such as making sure that the corresponding version of grub is installed to the actual boot block of your boot device.) ** Changed in: grub (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/694886 Title: package linux-image-2.6.32-27-generic 2.6.32-27.49 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Status in “grub” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: grub Was prompted about a missing /boot/grub/menu.lst.
