Thanks for your answer. After a long observation time, It can be assured that 
it is a hardware issue. As a matter of fact the laptop underwent some other 
internal connection problems. This was just the first symptom. I left pass a 
long time in order to be sure that the issue did not reproduce.I have passed 
this info to the bug,which is already expired.

Maybe this was due to a failed suspend. could you try check this out,
maybe suspend to see if it completes properly and wifi is still fine?

Ubuntu release : 10.04, 32 bits. Upgraded from 9.10.
After kernel update  to 2.6.32-24-generic-pae #42, wifi is deactivated and 
there is no way to activate it. Laptop is ASUS M51v. Antenna light is on.F2 or 
Fn-F2 have no effect whatsoever. USB Wifi device doesn't work either.
Other laptops at home have not sufffered this damage after update.

Cable connection works.
Bug could be a driver matter, I guess.
Let me know whether you need som extra info. All debugging attempts yielded no
