If you run 'alsamixer' in a command line terminal at the same time it's
possible to better see what is going on.

The progress that is happening is actually:

  a. mute = 1, volume = 0/100 <--
  b. mute = 0, volume = 0/100 <--
  c. mute = 0, volume = 8/100
  d. mute = 0, volume = ...

and it is the transition between the muted and unmuted state that is
causing the pop.
