Similar/same problem here. Installed checkgmail using synaptic today (running 10.04) and checkgmail seemed to be working well. On next restart, checkgmail icon was missing from panel and App > Internet > CheckGmail did not appear to do anything. Ran /usr/bin/checkgmail and got the error message (possibly with diff line/column/byte numbers) reported in the OP.
