I also suffer from the hanging authentication dialog but also in places other than update manager.
I think the dialog is somehow launched by /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkit- agent-helper-1 as that process appears at the same time as the authentication dialog. After entering the password, the process disappears, but the dialog box is left open (I'm not sure which process actually owns the window).
