Ok, so I think I got that nailed down insofar as it is related to the
series of patches that add nx protection to the kernel read-only data
areas (possibly there is some glitch about where start and end of those
areas should be). In the end this should be fixed properly but for the
meantime I would propose to add a patch that simply disables the option
to write-protect the kernel data (which disables both). I did test this
approach and got an i386 instance booted with that modified -12 kernel.

Second, we should open a bug to track fixing the nx protection so we
have that separated from the does-not-boot case.
