I too got hit by this and lost a few hours in debugging it. laptop-mode-tools is old cruft... its description makes it sound much more useful than I gather it actually is, and given that this particular bug has been open for over a year indicates it's not likely to get fixed.
Since installation of this package has rather severe consequences (which I've verified on two of my own machines), I think we should go ahead and just drop it from the archive.
