Thank you again. It seems to have mostly worked. Another file error
occurred. Another "clean, update, upgrade" procedure fixed this.

Unfortunately:
-now the 'left-handed' mouse buttons do not work
-I have no pull-down menu
-I can't resize any of the working windows
-Some applications (update manager as one) can't be shut down. I have to reboot 
the system to get a working window.

If no one else has reported this problem, I expect my hardware may be at
fault.
