This happens to me every now and then, too. Ubuntu 10.10, clean install two weeks ago, using "medium" wm eye candy. I notice that esp. when using oocalc (OpenOffice spreadsheet) and playing around selecting/dragging/dropping/etc blocks of cells, parcellite starts hogging the CPU for ~5 secs every minute or so and oocalc becomes unresponsive during that time. I accidentally had top open while this was happening, otherwise I would definitely have blamed this on oocalc, but turning off parcellite immediately solved it.
At the time of writing, it is the first time I see parcellite going into an endless loop and staying in it, as the people above have seen. It may have happened before but I actually do not notice any real performance issues.. no syscalls are being made (see strace below) and everything else seems to run just fine, even though my computer is really slow (p4, slow ram). Now I can consistently repro: - $ strace parcellite .. busy (couple of times / second) gettimeofday, poll, writev, read cycle (esp on the /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 socket). top shows low activity, 24MB resident memory - right click parcellite icon .. works: context menu appears, activity looks normal - configure, about, play around with configure .. no problem - left click .. boom: no context menu, activity through the roof, strace's last words: mmap2(NULL, 4198400, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb2459000 <silence> .. copy / paste still works (select / middle click as well as ctrl c ctrl v) at this point, no matter what parcellite does. Unfortunately, at this point, not even a reboot helps. I wish I could tell you what specifically initiated this. UPDATE: sweet, a work-around: apparently ~/.local/share/parcellite/history was huge (7675706 bytes over 7341364 lines). I kind of regret not making a backup, but removing it and restarting parcellite solved my problem. I remember that viewing the contents showed most of the file to be a sequence of newlines. Don't know if it was being constantly extended, though. HTH!
