Alright, I just reverted everything I did.
Now I have only thinkfinger-tools and libpam-thinkfinger installed. Then I ran
  sudo tf-tool --acquire 
to store my fingerprint and made me the owner of ~/.thinkfinger.bir

That's it. No udev rule, no fingerprint group.
Interestingly, it now works fine for GDM and the Software Center but stopped 
working with lock screen (and it still doesn't work with sudo and gksu).

I hope this helps somehow.

btw: I'm still confused about the uinput issue. Is this module missing
from Maverick's kernel?
