Its working again... On a different machine also running feisty with a later nVidia video card, I noticed that the latest update reverted the nvidia-glx package to 1.96xx, so I decided to try to enable it again on my laptop. I reinstalled nvidia-glx, rebooted, and it works correctly, with desktop effects on. (This is the Latitude D800 with NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 Go)
