Not just VAIOs, I encountered this on an HP EliteBook 8540p running Maverick. I just installed kernel 2.6.38-999-generic #201101281114 and the problem is resolved. This laptop has nVidia graphics (NVS 5100M) and everything is working fine so far with the nVidia drivers from the repository (no black screen). I do have a problem with the Virtual Box drivers though, so be aware.
