Only to make sure this is the bug I experience: The
sudo apt-get update 
doesn't crash the network manager.
A sudo apt-get dist-upgrade does, though.

Still investigating if this is triggered by any post-installation script
that is commonly run. The last time nm-applet crashed on my computer the
post-installation scripts did output the following messages:

Processing triggers for ureadahead ...
ureadahead will be reprofiled on next reboot
Processing triggers for menu ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Processing triggers for python-support ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
