Binary package hint: ubiquity
I have a 250GB disk that I split into 3 partitions using the Windows 7
setup DVD. Windows 7 created its own 100MB partition at the beginning of
the disk, totalling 4 partitions. So, partition 1 (100MB) is used by
Windows (System Reserved). Partition 2 (50GB) contains the Windows 7
installation. I reserved partition 3 (50GB) for Ubuntu 10.10, and
Partition 4 (132GB) is reserved for Data, which I want to be accessible
to both Windows and Ubuntu.
I followed all the steps in your Ubuntu website to create a bootable USB
stick (2GB), and I downloaded the latest Ubuntu ISO image (10.10 x86) to
complete the USB loader process. It booted just fine, and started the
GUI wizard from the USB stick, offering the option to Try or Install
Ubuntu. I selected Install, and manual partition. I then deleted
partition 3 using the Ubuntu setup GUI, and recreated it as Ext4 file
system, with format enabled and "/" as the device. It continued without
problems to connect to my ADSL internet connection, prompted for the
time zone and started installing. After a few seconds it crashed stating
that there's a problem with my CD/DVD drive. This is strange, because it
is a fairly new laptop computer, and Windows didn't complain about the
drive at all. (I installed Windows 7 from a DVD.) Also, there was
nothing in the DVD drive when Ubuntu setup complained.
I rebooted into Windows and ran a defrag and scandisk to check for HDD
errors, but no errors were reported. I even tried to clean the DVD drive
with a commercial DVD cleaner, and tried to install from a re-dowloaded
Ubuntu 10.10 ISO DVD. That produced the same error. So I burned the ISO
to a CD instead, but it produced the same results.
Apart from manually selecting partition 3 I accepted all the defaults
offered by the Ubuntu GUI. I don't think the partitioning is the cause,
because I performed exactly the same configuration on another laptop
computer, using Ubuntu 10.04, without any hiccups.
How do I proceed from here? Is there a way to tell whether the ISO image
is corrupt? I have now downloaded 3 copies in total, all exactly the
same size in bytes. All produce the same errors.
