Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

10.10 maverick meerkat

Unable to "safely" remove external hard drive, or unmount it causing
computer to search unsuccessfully for this hard drive upon boot if
manually removed during shutdown, thus adding to possible disk errors as
each boot requires me to skip the search.

Not an uncommon bug, various fixes tried but all unsuccessful.
