It was whichever version came on the 10.10 iso (not sure which as I've been
running updates since then).  Deleting all of my gnome configuration files
(.gnome2, etc.) fixed the issue at the time, and I haven't had it happen
again since then.  No idea which configuration option would cause that kind
of error though.
