Hi Fabio, I finally got round to trying a fresh install and this time all went well. The following are just some points that may or not be relevant to anyone else having the same problems.
- I downloaded the ISO again and noticed that the original one I had was a release candidate. I thought I'd downloaded on the day of release so was surprised. Either way, this may have been an issue. - I also used a VM of 10.04 rather than 9.10 but the problems with Startup Disk Creator were the same. - I also had a couple of problems with Startup Disk Creator itself - aside from the fact that it seemed to do something different each time I ran it - such as the fact that it doesn't show a progress bar while it's formatting the USB drive leading you to think it has failed. Usual Linux problems of things not being straightforward. Anyway, I have finally got a clean install so you can close this bug.
