I am aware of the delay before the dialog is shown, I have not found a simple way to make it appear earlier in the process. The error message comes from the mediamanagers HALbackend. I won't touch that code this close to release. The funny thing is, It might as well unmount successfully even though it gives that error.
I will try to figure out a way to do this better for feisty+1. As of now I belive the question is: Is this good enought for feisty or is it better to leave it out?
