Appears to be when the mouse is moved anytime between pressing return / selecting a user and starting to type the password.
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gdm If I hover the mouse over my username on the gdm login screen so as the tooltip "login as username" displays, then either pressing return to bring up the password box or clicking on my username causes the whole system to freeze. No response whatsoever, I can not switch to any VT, ctrl-alt-del or ssh into the machine. I did leave it for 5 mins once to see if it would sort itself out, when I came back the system was baking and on next reboot immediately warned of high temps. If I move the mouse pointer away from the user selection window so as the tooltip doesn't display, then use the keyboard to select the user I can log in normally.
