The thing to do would be to talk to the Debian maintainer and ask what you can do to help with the package. Getting it into Ubuntu from Debian is a simple sync request (requestsync in ubuntu-dev-tools which is available in Debian and Ubuntu). Feature Freeze is Feb 24, so we generally will not take new upstream versions after this without a good reason.
