I noticed some WLAN0 errors. Later I tried a wired ethernet connection and retried the update (or re-installation), which reproduced the same Kernel tar file error. I shutdown and powered down the system.
Today, I started system update to attempt to take other (security) updates. Much to my surprise, I found only Java/JRE updates and that 2.6.32-28 was installed! $ uname -a Linux mosteika-nx9010 2.6.32-28-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 10 21:21:01 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux Apparently it installed during the first update, according to file timestamps, even though System Update had its status as re-install during the second attempt: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2011-02-01 15:15 initrd.img -> boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-28-generic lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 2011-02-01 15:15 vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-28-generic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/711510 Title: package linux-image-2.6.32-28-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
