Hello Gabor, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and help
us make Ubuntu better.
Can you possibly post the contents of /var/log/mail.log and
/var/log/mail.err from the time period this happened? Otherwise we can't
see why Courier failed to start.
Also, it should be noted that 9.10 is nearing EOL (about 3 more months)
so you may want to update to 10.04.
