It seems anecdotally that bluez 4.69 works better with CSR based dongles than 4.84, whereas 4.69 appears to not work well if at all with (some) Broadcom based dongles. Incidentally the Brian Rogers PPA ( https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/ppa ) which was where 4.84 was obtained is now at 4.87. I have not tried this version.
