As said, it works the first time it's plugged in. If (after disconnecting it that first time) I re-start X it will work as the original connection (and that is a repeated cycle). The other option that works well is to open a terminal and mount it manually every time I subsequently plug in the MP3 Player (that's a bit annoying, but faster then restarting X all the time). I don't have problems like this with flash memory sticks, or problems with nearly any other USB device.
