if /home partition is full gnome cannot write to /~/.local/share/gvfs-
metadata/home

this file will be 0 bytes in problem systems.

remove 
/~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home

and reboot
this should recreate a proper /~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/home file and all 
icaons will be shown up to desktop.
