Thank you for the feedback... my observation was as stated -- whatever might have been in /tmp seemed insignificant compared to whatever was going into /var/backup.
I believe I have several individual files that exceed the free space on my root volume, so I suspect that the process(es) gzipping the files for efficient transfer must have filled the space. This is without looking at the code -- all I know is from a user perspective -- I killed off a gzip process AND the volume was very nearly full until I deleted the /var/backup directory. I am almost ready to upgrade to Dapper on that system and when I do I will repartition to leave more space. I also now have a Dapper i686 system and an external drive to test with.
